We are Mavericks/Equity Summit

The goal of this event was to move forward with urgency and purpose in raising awareness, knowledge and action on equity issues. This event was in response to a group of seniors filming a social media marketing video called “We Are…” where they filmed students addressing stereotypes related to their affinity groups.

Recruiting and Retaining Teachers of Color

The purpose of this conference was to not only recruit and retain teachers of color, but also highlight the importance of cultural responsiveness, diversity and equity in our educator practices. In Pierce County, there has been a history of where equity, inclusion, and social justice had been neglected and still needing to be addressed. Some of these incidents included anti-Chinese sentiment and riots and gentrification issues that have adversely impacted communities of color. Our conference was a means to openly discuss these issues and address how our education system can better respond to equity, diversity, and inclusion issues in a proactive and respectful way.
